Mengarah.com, Jakarta- (Large Ultraviolet Optical Infrared Surveyor), atau dikenal sebagai LUVOIR adalah teleskop luar angkasa gelombang multipanjang konsep yang dikembangkan oleh NASA di bawah kepemimpinan dari Tim Definisi Sains dan Teknologi. Pada dasarnya menyerupai teleskop Hubble tapi dengan versi yang jauh lebih baik. LUVOIR diharapkan mampu melakukan penelitian ilmiah yang tidak mampu dilakukan teleskop generasi sebelumnya.
Cermin dari teleskop LUVOIR ini berukuran dua kali lebih besar dari teleskop James Webb dan tujuh kali lebih besar dari Hubble atau sekitar lebih dari 15 meter.
LUVOIR memiliki tujuan sains utama untuk mengkarakterisasi berbagai exoplanet, termasuk yang mungkin layak huni. Tujuan tambahan adalah untuk memungkinkan berbagai astrofisika, dari zaman reionisasi, melalui pembentukan dan evolusi galaksi, hingga pembentukan bintang dan planet. LUVOIR akan menjadi Misi Sains Strategis Besar dan akan dipertimbangkan untuk memulai pengembangan setelah tahun 2020.
Saat ini LUVOIR hanya dalam tahap desain dan bersaing dengan observatorium lain untuk mendapatkan pendanaan. Jika berhasil, teleskop ruang angkasa ini akan direncanakan untuk diluncurkan sekitar tahun 2030.
Tim Studi LUVOIR telah menghasilkan desain untuk dua jenis LUVOIR : satu dengan cermin teleskop berdiameter 15,1m (LUVOIR-A) dan satu dengan cermin berdiameter 8m (LUVOIR-B). LUVOIR dapat mengamati panjang gelombang cahaya ultraviolet, tampak, dan inframerah dekat.
